SECOND-generation XKR builds on the strengths of the superseded model – great looks, supercharged 4.2-litre V8 engine and slick 6-speed auto transmission. Under the familiar-looking body, however, is the new aluminium monocoque chassis that has similarly blessed the regular non-supercharged XK models with lighter weight and therefore better handling, braking, performance and fuel economy. Better still, the lightweight construction is much more torsionally rigid than the previous steel chassis, resulting in better ride and handling in both the coupe and convertible, as well as endowing the drop-top version with the solid feel of a hardtop.

Jaguar XKR

THE high-performance XJR has been around since May 1998, soon after the original E-Type-inspired XK8 debuted. It was originally fitted with a 4.0-litre supercharged engine developing 276kW/525Nm, driving through a 5-speed automatic transmission. There has never been a manual gearbox available for the XKR. In October 2002 the XKR was upgraded significantly with a 4.2-litre version of the same engine and power increased to 298kW/553Nm. It was mated to a new 6-speed ZF automatic.
